A Ceramic Degree, a Wax Candle, and No One to Review It

She took a ceramics degree and went to work in wax. Indonesian artisans pour each layer, and no buyer of one has ever surfaced.

Did not pass

Central Saint Martins trains ceramicists. Yod Suntanaphan completed her BA there in ceramic design, then did something unexpected: she started working in wax.

The Stack Candle emerged from her East London studio as a sculptural object. Three geometric shapes in contrasting colors, stacked like a totem. A cone at the base, a ring in the middle, a cylinder on top.

Fair Trade artisans in Indonesia pour each layer by hand, using paraffin-free stearin wax and ecological dyes. The process takes time. No two candles are identical.

Cool Hunting featured the Stack Candle in May 2022, calling it “colorful and structurally playful.” Gessato stocks it. END Clothing stocks it. Goodhood, the East London design destination, stocks it. The University of the Arts London sells it through their official shop, alongside products from other Central Saint Martins alumni.

We verified all of this. The founder’s credentials check out. The production claims match across sources. The retail presence is real.

And when we searched for what actual buyers thought of the candle, we found nothing.

No reviews on the brand site. No reviews on any stockist. No mentions on Reddit candle threads. No Trustpilot page. No Amazon listing. No TikTok unboxings. The product exists in design press and retail curation, but the customer validation layer is empty.

What the Scores Said

GLOW earned 8 out of 10. The geometric stacking photographs well and the color combinations create genuine visual interest. This is a candle that functions as sculpture even before you light it. The form is distinctive enough that recipients would recognize it immediately on a shelf.

WOW earned 7. The discovery angle is solid. Central Saint Martins is one of the world’s most prestigious art schools. A ceramicist pivoting to wax is an unusual path. The Fair Trade production in Indonesia adds ethical texture. Most people have never seen a candle shaped like a cone, ring, and cylinder stacked together.

MOMENT earned 7. The unwrapping would create a beat of examination. Colors meet at precise lines. Each candle differs slightly from the next. The 30-hour burn time means it lasts.

TRUST earned 6 out of 10. Our confidence score landed at 60, which meets our threshold for a “Labs Verified” badge. It also reflects the absence of customer reviews. Platform integrity scored only 8 out of 20 because no verified review platform carries this product.

Why It Fell Short

The final SleekNova Score came to 7.10. Our threshold is 8.0. The gap is 0.90 points.

Here is how the math works:

Score Value Weight Contribution
GLOW 8 25% 2.00
WOW 7 35% 2.45
MOMENT 7 25% 1.75
TRUST 6 15% 0.90
Total 7.10

WOW carries the heaviest weight at 35%. At 7 out of 10, it contributes 2.45 points. To clear 8.0, the product would need WOW at 9.6, essentially a perfect discovery score, if everything else stayed the same.

Trust contributes to the shortfall, but it is not the primary cause. Even if Trust were a perfect 10, the final score would reach only 7.70.

Still below threshold.

The Stack Candle scored solid 7s across discovery and moment. Solid is not enough. Our system requires products to excel somewhere to compensate for weaknesses elsewhere. This one is good across the board without being exceptional anywhere.

What This Reveals

The Yod & Co Stack Candle represents a specific phenomenon in the gift market: products that exist primarily within design-professional networks. Cool Hunting’s audience includes buyers for boutiques, set designers, architects. These are the people who see the candle, recognize Central Saint Martins, understand the craft story, and place an order.

Regular consumers searching for sculptural candles or colorful home decor may never encounter it. The product is not on Amazon. It does not appear in most candle recommendation threads. The brand has limited mainstream visibility compared to indie candle brands that have crossed over.

This creates two problems our system cannot solve. First, no customer reviews means we cannot verify satisfaction. Second, the discovery and moment scores, while respectable, do not reach the heights needed to offset the trust gap.

What Would Change This

The math shows two paths to 8.0:

Path 1: Exceptional discovery. If the product earned WOW 9 or higher through a major design award, museum acquisition, or viral moment, it could clear 8.0 even with current trust levels.

Path 2: Customer validation. One hundred verified buyer reviews would push confidence higher and lift Trust toward 8. Combined with small gains elsewhere, that might be enough.

Neither path exists today. The Stack Candle remains exactly what we found: a design object with verifiable pedigree, interesting provenance, and respectable scores that do not add up to exceptional.

Probably a beautiful gift. We could not verify it meets our standard.
