Ace Hotels Gave It a Yes. We Can’t.

Five friends who met weekly for beer now supply Ace Hotel guest rooms on three continents.

Did not pass

Ace Hotels put this soap dish in guest rooms from Brooklyn to Sydney. Architectural Digest featured the brand. Food52 named it one of the 14 best soap dishes you can buy.

We scored it 6.8 out of 10.

Who’s wrong?

The Product

Pretti.Cool Terrazzo Soap Dish. $28. Hand-cast concrete with recycled glass aggregate. Made in Houston by a design collective that started as weekly beer meetups among five friends in 2017. Twelve color options. Natural voids from the casting process make each one unique.

The Ace Hotel commission is documented on Pretti.Cool’s website: “The Ace Hotel asked us to create a small round soap dish for guest rooms worldwide.” The locations include Brooklyn, New Orleans, Chicago, Palm Springs, Los Angeles, Toronto, Athens, and Sydney.

That’s not a small vote of confidence. That’s a hospitality company known for design curation saying: this product represents our brand on three continents.

The Scores

GLOW: 7. Terrazzo concrete photographs well. Twelve colors. Visible aggregate creates texture. Design press featured. But “photographs well” isn’t “stops your scroll.” It’s attractive, not arresting.

WOW: 7. Good origin story. Ace Hotels validation. Not on Amazon. But the discovery factor has limits.

A soap dish, no matter how well-made, rarely produces the reaction we’re measuring for.

MOMENT: 7. Concrete has weight. The texture invites touch. It upgrades a bathroom counter. But unwrapping a soap dish isn’t unwrapping a revelation. The scene is pleasant, not memorable.

TRUST: 5.9. Six verified reviews across two platforms. All positive. But six reviews in three years is a whisper, not a signal.

Final score: 6.80. Our threshold: 8.0.

The Math Problem

Here’s something we don’t usually show. The formula:

SleekNova Score = (GLOW × 0.25) + (WOW × 0.35) + (MOMENT × 0.25) + (TRUST × 0.15)

A product scoring 7 across GLOW, WOW, and MOMENT needs a Trust score of 13.67 to reach 8.0. Trust maxes at 10.

It’s mathematically impossible.

This product didn’t fail because of thin reviews. Even with perfect trust validation, a 7-7-7 product tops out at 7.15. The gap isn’t fixable.

The honest truth: this is a good product that isn’t exceptional. And we only feature exceptional.

The Ace Hotels Question

But here’s what kept us thinking: Ace Hotels chose this.

Ace isn’t a budget chain filling rooms with whatever’s cheapest. They’re a hospitality brand built on curation. Their buyers evaluated this soap dish, handled it, tested it in context, and decided it belonged in guest bathrooms worldwide.

That’s professional validation from people whose job is choosing objects that represent a brand.

Should that count?

We decided no. Here’s why.

Ace Hotels is asking: “Does this fit our brand for a three-night stay?” They care about durability, aesthetics, brand alignment, bulk pricing, and how it photographs for their Instagram. Those are legitimate criteria. They’re just not our criteria.

We’re asking: “Will someone unwrap this and feel something?” We care about the moment a gift changes hands. The reaction. The story the recipient tells later. Whether this object earns a permanent place in someone’s home or becomes bathroom clutter within a year.

A hotel guest encounters this soap dish for 72 hours. A gift recipient lives with it for years.

Those are different relationships. They require different validation.

What B2B Validation Misses

Hospitality buyers test products in controlled environments. Controlled lighting. Professional cleaning. Replacement cycles measured in months, not decades. They’re optimizing for “good enough at scale,” not “cherished by an individual.”

Consumer reviewers test products in reality. Morning routines. Hard water. Soap residue. Kids who knock things off counters. They’re reporting on lived experience, not professional evaluation.

Both types of validation are real. But only one tells us whether someone’s friend will be delighted to receive this as a gift.

And that’s the question we exist to answer.

Six people have answered it so far. All six said yes. But six isn’t enough to know.

What We Verified

The Ace Hotels commission: confirmed via brand website.

The press coverage: Food52, Dwell, and Apartment Therapy features verified. Additional claims (Architectural Digest, Better Homes & Gardens, Marie Claire) listed on brand press page but not individually verified.

The production: hand-cast in Houston, Texas. Small batches. Custom rubber molds. Founders Kathrine Zeren Gilmer, Jeff Gilmer, Mike Garman, Kari Breitigam, and Erick Sandlin verified.

The retail presence: Brooklinen, DIGS, Flourish & Foundry, Woods Grove. Price consistent at $28.

The reviews: 2 on brand site (verified buyers, 5 stars), 4 on Brooklinen (5 stars). Total: 6 reviews over approximately three years.

What This Means for Our Methodology

We’ve added a note to our internal documentation: B2B validation does not substitute for consumer validation. Professional buyers and individual gift recipients are evaluating different things.

This doesn’t mean B2B validation is worthless. It’s signal. Ace Hotels choosing a product suggests baseline quality. But it doesn’t tell us whether unwrapping it creates joy.

That’s what reviews tell us. That’s what we need more of.

The Verdict

Ace Hotels isn’t wrong. We’re not wrong. We’re answering different questions.

Theirs: “Does this belong in our guest rooms?”

Ours: “Does this belong on SleekNova?”

Their answer: yes. Our answer: no.

Not “not yet.” No.

The math doesn’t leave room for hope. A 7 across GLOW, WOW, and MOMENT maxes out at 7.15 even with perfect trust. More reviews won’t change that. This is a good product. Good isn’t the bar.

Exceptional is the bar. Close doesn’t count.
