Why Jacquemus Collaborates With a Stuffed Animal Brand
Made the cut
A plush whale is not supposed to have a résumé.
But when we ran the BigStuffed Albino Whale through our full scoring methodology, one dimension kept surfacing credentials that belong on a fashion CV, not a baby gift tag. Lanvin. Giambattista Valli. Jacquemus. Bonpoint. VEJA.
We scored WOW at 9 out of 10. This is what that number contains.
The Provenance Chain We Verified
Dana Muskat trained at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design, then worked at Lanvin and Giambattista Valli.
In 2013, she sewed a one-meter white octopus for her newborn niece. Friends wanted their own. BigStuffed was born from that impulse, not from a market study.
A decade later, Jacquemus chose BigStuffed for the Pink 2 capsule in November 2021. The collaboration featured the L’Esquinade spider crab, sewn from recycled Jacquemus fabrics. Not a licensed logo placement. Actual deadstock material, repurposed.
Bonpoint created a Liberty edition. VEJA built a 10-year partnership that began in 2013 and produced a kids shoe collaboration in 2024.
These are creative partnerships with houses that reject mass production. No plush brand in the Jellycat price range can claim that company.
That gap is what WOW measures.
What WOW Scores and Why It Matters for Gift Buyers
WOW accounts for 35% of our final score. It measures uniqueness and discovery: how rare is this in the market, how deep is its story, and why would a gift buyer never find it through conventional search?
The BigStuffed whale scores 9 because the fashion provenance is real (we traced it through four collaborations and two verified employers) but invisible on mainstream gift radar. A buyer searching for baby shower gifts will encounter Jellycat hundreds of times before encountering BigStuffed once.
That asymmetry between verifiable quality and discoverability is the definition of high WOW.
For a baby shower gift at $171, the question is not whether the whale is soft. The question is whether the story behind it survives the moment someone asks where you found it.
A designer who left Lanvin to sew plush sea creatures, then had Jacquemus call, is a story that holds.
The Numbers Behind 8.9
WOW was not the only dimension that scored high.
GLOW (visual and sensory quality) scored 9: 83 centimeters of cotton-blend exterior (74% cotton, 26% polyester) with recycled polyester filling, a muted albino palette, and branded packaging including a reusable fabric bag.
MOMENT (the gift-giving experience) scored 9: the physical presence in wrapping, the immediate cotton softness, the droopy eyes that trigger a reaction from nursery visitors.
Trust scored 8, grounded in 3,256 Etsy reviews at 4.8 stars across the full BigStuffed catalog, plus CE certification safe from birth.
The final score of 8.9 places this in the top tier of everything we have evaluated.
But the score alone is not the point. The point is that one Etsy reviewer has sent half a dozen whales to friends who had babies. Repeat gifting at $171 means the reaction eliminates the need for explanation.
Who This Score Serves
Our gift intelligence matched this whale to a specific buyer: someone who designs a nursery like an interior project, not a toy store. Someone who knows Jacquemus or wants to. Someone who gives one meaningful gift instead of five forgettable ones and retells the story behind what they give.
If that description fits the person you are buying for, the BigStuffed Albino Whale passed our evaluation at 8.9. Each whale is handmade in Europe. CE-tested from birth. Cotton on top, recycled polyester filling inside.
Shipped in a branded box with a reusable fabric bag. No wrapping required.
