Crokinole Kept Six Households Because It Never Asked for the Whole Room

Half an hour. That was the plan for the new board, a quick try before moving to the game they had actually sat down for. Seven hours later they were still playing.

One evening like that is an anecdote. What made it worth examining is that five more households in the same record describe the same behaviour, and that two other voices, neither of them one of the six, put their finger on one cause.

The object is a crokinole board from a shop in Elmira, Ontario, and it costs $395 CAD. It scored 8.37 with us, which cleared our bar, and the number inside that total doing the most work was a 9.0 on how a gift behaves once it is living in the house.

Six households, one shape

An extended family of six adults was already meeting almost weekly to play board games before this board arrived. What changed afterwards is small enough to miss, and it is the whole finding: the invitations stopped being for a board game night and started naming the game itself.

A second household was ten days into ownership and had played on it every one of those days, two hours a day at the least. A third plays daily. A fourth made Sunday night dinner and crokinole the standing slot. A fifth household treats it as the default, after a meal, at the weekend, or when the day needs breaking up. The sixth is the seven hours.

Six accounts of one behaviour is a pattern. A pattern still does not tell you what is causing it.

The part those two agree on

An owner in the United Kingdom, who bought his through the maker’s European distributor, wrote that the game takes “enough attention to keep people engaged” and no more than that, which is why nobody at the table has to stop talking.

A reviewer reports the same property from his own house, and he reports it about his wife: what she likes best is that the game does not ask her to concentrate hard, and lets her keep talking to the people around the table.

Now look at who those two are. The first bought his from a specialist importer and owes the shop nothing. The second got his board at a discount he declares, and the shop elsewhere describes him as a friend of the team. Those are not two equal witnesses. The useful part is that they arrive at the same sentence from opposite sides of that line.

Why that narrow window decides an expensive game

A $395 board that comes out twice is a bad $395 board, whatever it is made of. That is the real question sitting behind the price, and it is not answered by how well the thing is built.

What those two describe is a mechanical property rather than a sentimental one. A game that demands the whole room ends the conversation, and the conversation is usually why the people are there. One that demands nothing gets abandoned. Crokinole sits in the gap between them, which is why it survives an ordinary week instead of an occasion.

A third owner names the consequence in his own words: “rooms full of people who would never usually consider themselves into something like this get completely enthralled by it.”

What the 9.0 does not cover

The same record produced a 6.8 elsewhere, and the two numbers are not in tension. The 6.8 measures how much independent evidence stands behind the object, and it is derived rather than judged: our confidence in the sourcing came to 68 out of 100, and that figure divided by ten is the score.

Two of the warmest voices here disqualified themselves without being asked. One owner volunteers that this is the only crokinole board he has ever played on, so he cannot rank it against anything. A second tells you he came to the game recently and has nothing to measure it against, then guarantees in the same sentence that you will not find a better board.

There is also a title on this object that we would not print. The shop describes itself as the championship’s Official Board Builder, and nothing on the championship’s own site says so, so the phrase stays out of our verdict.

What could be checked is narrower, and it is checkable. The 2025 results name the shop’s founder as a Competitive Doubles Champion, and a national broadcaster, writing in its own voice rather than the shop’s, reports that the tournament boards are built there.

The maker gives one instruction

Buy it if the plan is to leave it out and play on it. Asked where to store the board, the shop gives the same answer: the table.

The evening those six households describe is not something the object can promise on its own. It is what happened when the board was already out and nobody had to be organised into using it.
