From Buddhist Altars to Bottle Openers: How a 129-Year Foundry Pivot Scored 9 Out of 10

Made the cut

FUTAGAMI FUTAGAMI Eclipse Bottle Opener $50 Scored 8.4 / 10 View Product Page

The FUTAGAMI Eclipse Bottle Opener ($50) comes from a brass foundry in Takaoka, Japan that was established in 1897.

For 112 years, that foundry made Buddhist altar fittings. Then architect-trained designer Oji Masanori walked in and convinced them to make livingware.

We wanted to verify that story and understand what it means for the product you hold in your hand. The result: a WOW score of 9 out of 10, one of the highest in our barware category.

What We Verified

Our 145-point evaluation starts with the truth map, a list of every factual claim traced to its primary source.

For the Eclipse, we verified eight claims across eight independent sources. The 1897 founding date appears on the Gladfellow product listing. The Buddhist altar fittings origin is confirmed through Japan Trends editorial coverage from December 2025.

Oji Masanori’s 2009 Interior Lifestyle Award is documented in the Rikumo Journal.

The IHADA sand-cast technique, where the raw surface texture is left intentionally unpolished, is described consistently across every retailer page we checked.

Cool Hunting covered FUTAGAMI’s debut at Nalata Nalata in New York during NYCxDESIGN 2016. The Matureware hardware line won Best Hardware at that event.

Three premium design retailers carry the Eclipse independently: Mjölk in Toronto, Nalata Nalata in New York, and Tortoise General Store in Los Angeles.

When three stores with reputations for selectivity stock the same product, that is validation through curation rather than distribution volume.

Why WOW Scored 9 Out of 10

WOW measures uniqueness and discovery factor.

The FUTAGAMI Eclipse scored 9 because of four verified elements working together.

First, 129-year foundry heritage, not as marketing language, but as a traceable fact confirmed through multiple independent sources.

Second, Buddhist altar fittings as the original product line, a specific origin that no other bottle opener brand shares.

Third, the Oji Masanori collaboration, an architect-trained designer whose work won the 2009 Interior Lifestyle Award.

Fourth, the IHADA technique itself. Most brass foundries polish their castings smooth. FUTAGAMI leaves the sand-cast texture raw, which means each piece carries the specific marks of the mold it came from.

Try to find another $50 bottle opener with a 129-year foundry behind it. We did. There is not one.

That rarity is what WOW measures, and it is why the score sits at 9.

What GLOW and MOMENT Tell You

GLOW scored 8.5.

The Eclipse form is sculptural, built from concentric circles that create visual interest beyond function. It hooks onto the neck of a bottle when not in use, which means it displays rather than disappears into a drawer.

The IHADA texture is deliberately rough. This is not a flaw. It is the foundry’s signature.

MOMENT scored 8.5.

The 75 grams of solid brass surprise on first touch. Weight is the first signal that this is not stamped metal.

The raw texture prompts examination. The Eclipse form is not obviously a bottle opener, which creates a question from guests.

That question is the gift-giving moment: it gives the giver a story to share about Takaoka, about 1897, about Buddhist altars becoming barware.

Where Trust Stands

TRUST scored 6.8.

We applied the Brand Trust Protocol because no product-specific customer reviews exist for the Eclipse.

The protocol adds confidence when brand-level indicators are strong: 129 years of operation, an award-winning designer, premium retail distribution, and editorial press coverage. All four criteria are met.

Japan Trends featured the Eclipse in December 2025. Cool Hunting covered the brand at NYCxDESIGN 2016.

The confidence score of 68 out of 100 reflects strong institutional validation with the absence of consumer review data. If even fifteen customers reviewed this product on any platform, the trust score would move significantly.

The Score Calculation

We calculate the SleekNova Score using a weighted formula: GLOW (25%) + WOW (35%) + MOMENT (25%) + TRUST (15%).

For the Eclipse: (8.5 x 0.25) + (9.0 x 0.35) + (8.5 x 0.25) + (6.8 x 0.15) = 2.125 + 3.15 + 2.125 + 1.02 = 8.42, rounded to 8.4.

The minimum to feature on SleekNova is 8.0. The Eclipse clears it, carried by the strongest WOW score in our barware catalog.

Who This Is For

The Eclipse works as a host gift that is not wine or flowers.

It works for dads who say they do not need anything.

It works for friends who have opinions about what belongs on their bar cart.

The $50 price point sits in the range where it signals thought without overstepping.

A nice bottle of wine costs the same and disappears in an evening. The Eclipse develops patina with every use and earns permanent counter space.

The same foundry’s brass paperweight, which cleared our threshold separately, documents the color shift precisely: caramel tones at five years of handling, russet brown at approximately thirty.

Skip this if the recipient only drinks screw-tops, prefers chrome gadgets over brass patina, or does not care about where their objects come from.

The story is the gift. If that does not matter, the Eclipse is just a heavy piece of brass.
