Three Futagami Products Stayed. This One We Pulled.

Rejected - Rescored at 7.8 (below 8.0 threshold after pipeline update)

Did not pass

We carry three Futagami products on SleekNova. The Eclipse Bottle Opener scores 8.4. The Brass Tape Dispenser scores 8.3. The Brass Paperweight scores 8.2.

We like this brand. We have written about their 128-year Takaoka foundry, the 2009 Interior Lifestyle Award, and the sand-cast ihada texture across four separate product pages.

The Galaxy Brass Trivet was the fourth. It scored 8.2 when we first published it in December 2025.

We are removing it now.

What Changed

In early 2026, we updated our scoring pipeline. The system that evaluates trust became stricter about how it weights institutional validation against consumer evidence.

The old pipeline gave products with strong brand heritage and retail distribution a higher trust floor. The new pipeline requires the math to hold at every step: confidence breakdown factors must sum to the confidence score, the trust score must derive from that sum divided by ten, and the final SleekNova score must use the derived trust value.

No rounding. No overrides.

We re-ran the Galaxy Brass Trivet through the updated pipeline. Every URL was re-verified. Every stockist was re-checked.

We found 14 retailers carrying this trivet across six countries, including Nalata Nalata in New York, Gessato, Zen Minded, and JINEN. We confirmed the Cool Hunting coverage from 2016 and 2011. We confirmed the Remodelista product listings for Futagami trivets. We confirmed the Rikumo Journal brand profile.

We found one customer review on Niguramu in Japan: five stars, the buyer called it a work of art.

That is the complete consumer evidence base for this product.

Where the Math Lands

The Galaxy Trivet scores 9 out of 10 for visual appeal. The celestial brass form with its ihada sand-cast texture photographs as sculpture, not kitchenware.

It scores 8 for discovery. The 128-year foundry heritage is genuine. Oji Masanori’s collaboration produced objects that sit in design stores from Minneapolis to Vienna.

It scores 8 for the gift scene. Over a pound of solid brass registers immediately in the hands. The origin story surfaces at every dinner party.

Those three dimensions total 7.05 out of 7.50 possible (before trust).

The problem is the fourth dimension.

Trust accounts for 15% of the final score. With one verified customer review across all platforms searched, the confidence score lands between 45 and 50 out of 100, depending on how much weight we assign to the Brand Trust Protocol adjustment.

That translates to a trust score between 4.5 and 5.0. Plugging trust into the formula: the maximum honest SleekNova score is 7.8.

Our threshold is 8.0.

Why the Other Three Stay

The Eclipse Bottle Opener, the Tape Dispenser, and the Paperweight all clear 8.0 under the updated pipeline. Not because their trust profiles are different. All four Futagami products share the same zero-review reality, the same Brand Trust Protocol, the same institutional validation.

The difference is in the other three dimensions.

The Bottle Opener scores 9 for discovery because sculptural brass barware barely exists as a product category. The Tape Dispenser scores 9 for discovery and 9 for visual appeal because brass tape dispensers had no category precedent before Oji Masanori proposed one. The Paperweight scores 9 for discovery because nobody expects Buddhist altar craft on a desk.

The trivet is a beautiful object. It is also a trivet. Trivets exist. Brass trivets exist. The category is established.

That reality compresses the discovery score to 8 instead of 9, and at 35% weight, that single point costs 0.35 in the final calculation. Combined with the lower trust score, the math falls short.

What This Means

We recommended this product for five months. People may have bought it based on our recommendation.

We believe the Galaxy Trivet is worth buying. Futagami has been casting brass in Takaoka since 1897. The ihada texture is genuine. The patina develops from caramel at five years to russet brown at thirty. Fourteen retailers across six countries stock it. Cool Hunting and Remodelista have both covered the brand.

None of that changed.

What changed is our system. The updated pipeline applies trust scoring with stricter derivation rules. The Galaxy Trivet, with one review and the low confidence score that follows from it, cannot reach 8.0 through legitimate math.

We chose to remove it rather than preserve a score we can no longer justify under our own methodology.

The three remaining Futagami products on SleekNova carry the same foundry story, the same ihada texture, and the same patina promise. If the Galaxy Trivet builds a review base over time, the math changes.

We will be watching.
