Twelve Bevels. Three Reviews.

The twelve beveled faces on the HMM Paperweight are not arbitrary. They appear on the base of the HMM Scissors, which won Taiwan’s Golden Pin Design Award for Best Design in 2017. They appear across the studio’s product line.

It is, as the brand puts it, their “signature” geometry.

We found three reviews.

The Brand Is Verified. The Product Isn’t.

HMM, which stands for Human Made Method, operates from Taipei. Founded in 2014, the studio has earned 1,396 reviews at 5.0 stars on Pinkoi, Taiwan’s largest design marketplace. Yanko Design has featured their work multiple times.

Premium retailers across three continents stock their products: Godshot in Glasgow, Mogutable in the US, Birmingham Design Shop in the UK.

The Scissors that won Golden Pin Best Design 2017 have 47 reviews on Pinkoi alone. The Paperweight, which shares the same design language and the same 50mm diameter base, has three reviews on the brand’s own site.

We verified them: “A beautiful object that also has a function. Superb quality.” And: “Lovely piece of craftsmanship… makes me happy just looking at it.”

Both sound genuine. Neither tells us what happens at month six.

What the Math Says

Confidence Score: 65 out of 100. That’s “Good” by our methodology, but the breakdown reveals the gap.

Platform integrity scored 10 out of 20: native Shopify reviews without third-party verification. Source diversity scored 5 out of 20: too few independent voices. External echo scored 20 out of 20: the brand’s press presence and retailer distribution are real.

Trust Score: 6.5, derived from Confidence. The Brand Trust Protocol added points because HMM has institutional credibility even where product-level validation is thin.

But the formula only stretches so far.

GLOW: 8. Precision-milled aluminum with geometric facets that catch light. Two finishes: anodized black or raw aluminum that develops patina with handling. Yanko Design called the twelve beveled faces “visual interest through their geometric precision.”

WOW: 8. Discovery factor is real. Most people have never heard of Taiwan’s design scene. The Golden Pin Award is Taiwan’s most prestigious, and HMM’s Scissors won Best Design. For $28, you’re buying a portal into a world most people don’t know exists.

MOMENT: 8. The 101 grams surprise on pickup. The beveled faces create a geometric grip. The Raw finish evolves with handling. Yanko Design noted: “The tactile quality of the machined surfaces invites idle handling during thinking moments.”

Final Score: 7.8. Our threshold is 8.0.

What Would Change This

Twenty reviews. Even ten. People who bought this Paperweight, used it for six months, and wrote about whether the aluminum held up. Whether the pen holder function works with their preferred pens. Whether the Raw finish patinas the way they hoped.

The brand has the credibility. The product needs the receipts.

If you want a desk object with that kind of paper trail, the Futagami Brass Paperweight passed where this one couldn’t. Different material, different price point ($60), but the same promise: a tactile object that earns its place on a desk through daily use. The HMM Paperweight is probably excellent. The geometry is proven. The studio is respected. The price is fair.

We just can’t prove the product yet.
