Kobayashi has judged the Good Design Award since 2016. A seat on that jury says nothing about how his grain-matched seam ages.

Mikiya Kobayashi has served on the Good Design Award jury since 2016. He won an iF Gold Award in 2010, a Red Dot Award the same year. He lectures at three Japanese universities. Karimoku, Tendo Mokko, and Lexon have commissioned his work.
His Kime Pen Case, a smooth wood cylinder made by Hokkaido craftsmen, scored 7.5.

The Credentials
The iF Gold Award is not the iF Award. Gold winners represent roughly 2% of all entries. Kobayashi won it for UKIHASHI, a set of chopsticks that float above the table. The same year, Red Dot recognized his work. By 2013, ELLE DECOR named him among Japan’s top young design talents. The Kyoto Global Design Award lists him as a laureate.
He founded MIKIYA KOBAYASHI INC. in Tokyo in 2006. The studio now operates from both Tokyo and Valencia. His client list reads like a furniture design syllabus: Fuji Furniture, Takumi Kohgei, Tendo Mokko, Lemnos, Gandiablasco.
Dreamy Person Inc., the Asahikawa woodworking company that produces Kime, has collaborated with Kobayashi since the brand’s inception. Asahikawa is one of Japan’s three great furniture towns, with sawmills operating since 1890. UNESCO designated it a City of Design.
The Product
The pen case is a cylinder that screws apart at the center. The two halves reconnect to align the natural wood grain, a detail that requires precision milling.
Nalata Nalata, the NYC Japanese craft retailer founded by a furniture designer and an apparel designer, stocks the full Kime line. KonMari, Marie Kondo’s official store, carried it until recently.
The price: $65. The reviews: zero.
The Math
We apply our Brand Trust Protocol when products have no customer reviews but strong institutional backing. Designer credentials, retail validation, and craft heritage can substitute for customer feedback. They did here. We verified iF Design’s award database. We confirmed Nalata Nalata’s active listing. We documented Asahikawa’s 130-year woodworking tradition.
The Confidence Score reached 65 out of 100, which translates to a Trust Score of 6.5. Respectable for a product with zero reviews. But the final calculation still fell short.

The threshold is 8.0. No exceptions.
What Would Change This
One review platform integration. If Nalata Nalata added Judge.me or Stamped, and five customers wrote about the grain alignment or the screw mechanism, the Trust Score would climb.
A MOMENT bump from 7 to 8, which better research into the unboxing experience might justify, would add 0.25 points. Either path reaches 8.0.

Why This Matters
A designer can judge the awards and still make products nobody reviews. Institutional validation proves quality exists. Customer validation proves someone experienced it.
We require both, or enough of one to compensate for the other. The Kime Pen Case had the first. It lacked the second.
The product is probably exceptional. We just cannot prove it yet.
