Four Reviews, Four Bloggers, and a Paper Formula They Rewrote

Reviewers said the paper could not take fountain ink, so the brand reformulated it, and one of them came back to confirm.

Did not pass

In 2018, a small Tokyo stationery brand released a notebook with paper that could not keep up with fountain pen ink. Bloggers noticed. Customers noticed.

The brand noticed too.

By 2021, the paper was different. Kunisawa had quietly reformulated their stock, developing what they now call Passepied. One reviewer who had criticized the original returned and published a second review. The paper, they reported, had improved radically.

A brand that rewrites its paper because early reviews said it needed work is a brand worth paying attention to. We spent two weeks paying attention. We found a company rooted in an Edo-period printing house, a logo borrowed from ancient mythology, and gilt copper edges that catch the light when you turn a page.

We also found four customer reviews.

The Heritage Behind the Name

Kunisawa is a 2017 brand. Its parent company, Kawachiya, is not.

Kawachiya was established during the Edo period (1603 to 1868). After World War II, the company moved into typeface mould casting. By 1971, it operated as a full printing company. In 2017, the printing house launched a stationery line.

The notebooks are made in Shimbashi, Tokyo. The logo is a Yatagarasu, the three-legged crow from Japanese mythology, stamped in hot foil on a matte black cover. The edges are copper gilt. The binding lays flat. The pages are A5, 192 of them, gridded at 5mm.

By every measure we could find, this is a carefully designed object.

What the Stationery Community Said

Four independent blogs reviewed the Find Note between 2018 and 2021: The Gentleman Stationer, The Pen Addict, Pencilcase Blog, and Gourmet Pens. These are writers who test paper with multiple pen types and care about bleed-through, feathering, and dry time.

The reviews are detailed.

The early reviews (2018) praised the design but flagged inconsistent fountain pen performance. This is the criticism that led to the paper reformulation. Pencilcase Blog returned in 2021 and confirmed the improvement.

On JetPens, the broader Kunisawa line carries 16 reviews across two other variants: the Find Soft (9 reviews) and the Find Smart Note (7 reviews). These are brand-level numbers, not specific to the Find Note Hard. On Ink+Volt, where we sourced our primary listing, the Find Note Hard has 4 customer reviews at 5.0 stars.

Four reviews and four blogs. Passionate, but thin.

Where the Numbers Fell

GLOW scored 8 out of 10. The monochrome palette with copper accents, the hot-foiled Yatagarasu, the gilt edges. This is a notebook that photographs well and looks better in person.

MOMENT scored 8.5. Reviewers describe the Passepied paper as silk-smooth. The pen glides. Copper edges catch light. For a tactile product, 8.5 is strong.

WOW scored 7.5. The Kawachiya heritage is real, but Kunisawa as a brand is nine years old. The paper improvement story adds genuine depth. We gave credit for the institutional printing history behind the name, though the stationery operation itself is young.

TRUST scored 7.4. Confidence score 74 out of 100, derived from sixteen brand-level reviews on JetPens, four product-level reviews on Ink+Volt, and four independent blog reviews. The community endorsement is genuine.

It is also small.

Our formula: (8 times 0.25) plus (7.5 times 0.35) plus (8.5 times 0.25) plus (7.4 times 0.15) equals 7.86. Our threshold is 8.0.

What Would Change Our Mind

Thirty customer reviews on a major retail platform. Not brand-level. Product-level. The Find Note Hard specifically. The stationery bloggers did their part. The customers have not shown up in numbers we can verify.

If Amazon or JetPens builds a review base for this specific notebook, we would re-score. The product passed every subjective test we ran. It failed the one that requires evidence from strangers.

Kunisawa rewrote their paper when early reviews said it needed work. That is not the behavior of a company cutting corners. It is the behavior of a company that will probably earn the numbers eventually.

They are not there yet.
