1917, Seventeen Five-Star Reviews, and Three Tenths of a Point

Its weaver and its country were founded the same year. Its designer's other client is Marimekko. Neither fact is a buyer.

Did not pass

The year was 1917. In Helsinki, Finland declared independence. In Lapua, a small Ostrobothnian town of 14,000, a man named Juho Annala opened a wool and felt boot factory.

Both events, in their own way, were about self-sufficiency.

Four generations later, Annala’s great-grandson Esko Hjelt and his wife Jaana run Lapuan Kankurit, which translates to “Weavers of Lapua.” The weaving mill still operates in Lapua with around 30 employees and 20 power looms running simultaneously.

Finnish Design Shop calls it “a rare sight in Europe,” one of the few factories still producing jacquard-woven linen and wool textiles on the continent.

The Designer Who Works for Marimekko

The Päkäpäät blanket was designed by Masaru Suzuki, a Japanese textile designer who earned his degree in Dyeing and Weaving Design from Tama Art University. After training at the Hiroshi Awatsuji Design Office and establishing his own practice in 1995, Suzuki now serves as a professor at Tokyo Zokei University.

He is best known in Finland for his designs for two brands: Marimekko and Lapuan Kankurit. The collaboration with Lapuan Kankurit has been running since 2009.

Päkäpäät is an old Finnish word for sheep. The blanket depicts a dozen Finnsheep, each with its own unique jacquard pattern, woven from 100% mulesing-free wool. The design reverses on the opposite side.

At €149 from the maker (around $160 through Finnish Design Shop), it sits at the upper end of quality wool throws.

What the Reviews Say

We found 17 product-specific reviews across two platforms. All 17 are five-star.

On FinnStyle, the largest US retailer of Lapuan Kankurit products (self-described as 20+ years in business with over 200,000 customers), 14 reviewers gave the Päkäpäät blanket a perfect score.

The reviews span six years, from February 2020 to February 2026, with genuine variety in voice and context. One reviewer discovered the blanket at a hotel in Kaikoura, New Zealand, then tracked it down through FinnStyle before she even returned home.

Another, a weaver and knitter who described herself as “critical for anything fiber related,” called it “extremely well made.” Multiple reviewers purchased it specifically as a gift.

Finnish Design Shop, the major Nordic design retailer, carries three additional verified-customer reviews, all five-star, from buyers in Berlin, Italy, and Finland.

Good On You, the independent sustainability rating platform, gives Lapuan Kankurit an overall “Good” rating with a top score of 5/5 for labour practices. Finnish Design Shop’s own Product Sustainability Framework rates the Päkäpäät blanket “Excellent,” with perfect scores for working conditions (9/9) and eco-friendly production (9/9).

Where the Score Fell

Our confidence system evaluates five factors. Heritage carried the product: 107 years, four generations, a Marimekko-credentialed designer, and institutional recognition from Good On You and Finnish Design Shop. That pushed the heritage and external validation scores to their ceiling.

But 17 reviews, even perfect ones, face structural limits in our system. The review platforms (FinnStyle’s native Shopify and Finnish Design Shop) carry less verification weight than independent third-party platforms.

No customer photos appeared beyond one. We found no Reddit discussions, YouTube reviews, or press coverage specific to this product. Trustpilot shows only four reviews for the entire brand, and those are company-level, not product-level.

The math: confidence score 60 out of 100. Trust score 6.0. Combined with the locked scores for visual appeal, discovery factor, and gift-giving scene (all 8 out of 10), the final score lands at 7.70. The threshold is 8.0.

What Would Change the Outcome

The gap is narrow. A stronger review base across additional platforms would shift the confidence score. More customer photos and independent editorial coverage of this specific product would build the verification depth our system needs.

The heritage and design credentials are already at the top of what we see. The evidence infrastructure has not caught up to them.

Lapuan Kankurit exports to approximately 30 countries and collaborates with Aalto University on design. The Päkäpäät blanket is described on the brand’s own site as “a long-time favorite.” If external review volume grows to match that reach, the numbers would look different.

We wanted this one. A Finnish weaving mill founded the year the country itself was born, collaborating with a Japanese designer whose other client is Marimekko.

Seventeen people who own this blanket gave it a perfect score. Our system needed more than seventeen.
