Father’s Workshop, Zero Reviews: Lola Mayeras and the Provençal Candlestick

SSENSE stocks what came out of her father's empty studio in Provence. Not one buyer has written a word about it.

Did not pass

She was eight years old when she made her first collection. Ceramic figurines, arranged on a shelf in her father’s souvenir shop on the road to Saint-Tropez.

She sold nothing. She didn’t care.

Her father was a ceramist, and his studio was attached to the house where she grew up, somewhere in the hills of Provence between vineyards and nature.

Twenty years and a fashion career later, Lola Mayeras came back.

The first COVID lockdown sent her home. Her father had retired. The studio sat empty. She picked up the clay again, and in 2020, her first ceramic collection emerged from the same workshop where she had once made those ugly figurines.

Two words describe what happened next: SSENSE noticed.

What We Found

The Hills Candlestick is a double candleholder in glazed white earthenware. Three colors: blue, pink, yellow. Dimensions: 17 by 18 by 8 centimeters. Price: approximately $96 (sold at EUR 88 on her own site). Every piece is handcrafted in the south of France. Each one is unique.

SSENSE currently stocks three Lola Mayeras products, including a Hoodie Vase at $166 and a Blend Candle Holder Set at $185. The Hills Candlestick was previously listed on SSENSE (product ID confirmed) though it was not available at the time of our research. Farfetch had also carried her work, though their inventory showed zero items when we checked.

Ceramic Review, the leading publication in the ceramics world, selected Lola Mayeras for its “One to Watch” emerging maker spotlight. FACES Magazine published a full interview with her in November 2025. Maison Flaneur profiled her studio and process.

When asked to describe her brand in three words, she said: “South of France, pop art, 60s.”

Before ceramics, she spent six years as a fashion designer in Paris, working as a stylist and chief designer for a fashion brand. She told FACES Magazine that when it came to creating something of her own, she had no desire to do it with clothes. The parallel she draws between her two careers is specific: she still thinks in volumes, still sketches in silhouettes, still builds stories across a collection.

What We Could Not Find

Customer reviews. Anywhere.

We searched Amazon (the brand does not sell there), Trustpilot (no page exists for lolamayeras.com), Etsy (not listed), Reddit (zero discussions), and Google (“Lola Mayeras reviews” returns press profiles and retailer listings, not customer feedback). The brand’s own product pages have no review section. SSENSE does not display customer reviews for her products.

This is not unusual for a French DTC ceramics brand established in 2020. But it is the reason we could not feature the Hills Candlestick.

The Scores

GLOW scored 9. The vivid Mediterranean glazes and undulating sculptural form photograph distinctly. WOW scored 9. A fashion designer returning to her ceramicist father’s Provençal workshop to build a brand that SSENSE now carries is a genuine discovery story.

MOMENT scored 8. A double candlestick with unexpected curves, in a color no one’s cabinet already has, becomes the object guests ask about.

Trust scored 1.0 out of 10.

Our trust system uses a 100-point Evidence Checklist. Five factors, each worth up to 20 points. Platform Integrity scored 0: no review platform exists on any sales channel. Source Diversity scored 0: zero product reviews to count. Source Quality scored 0: no customer photos. Claim Verification scored 0: no sentiment data to analyze.

External Echo scored 10: Ceramic Review coverage and SSENSE retail validation provided the only verifiable consumer-adjacent signals.

Total confidence: 10 out of 100. Trust score derived: 1.0 out of 10. Below our 4.0 trust floor.

We checked whether the Brand Trust Protocol could bridge the gap. It adds 15 confidence points when three of four criteria are met: brand age over 10 years, other products with reviews, stocking at recognized retailers, and editorial press coverage.

Lola Mayeras meets two (SSENSE stocking and editorial coverage). The brand is five years old, and no product in her catalog has accumulated customer reviews on any platform. Two of four is not enough.

Final SleekNova Score: (9 x 0.25) + (9 x 0.35) + (8 x 0.25) + (1.0 x 0.15) = 7.55. Threshold: 8.0.

What This Means

Lola Mayeras told Ceramic Review: “I try to approach my design process in a spontaneous and playful way.” She told FACES Magazine that the reaction she wants from people looking at her work is “a mixture of recognition and confusion. Like something familiar, yet strange enough to make you smile.”

We smiled. The math did not.

This is the third ceramic object we have rejected for the same structural reason. Completedworks had a Wikipedia page, five stockists including SSENSE and Dover Street Market, and zero product reviews. Eny Lee Parker judges the Dezeen Awards and has zero product reviews.

Now Lola Mayeras, with SSENSE distribution and Ceramic Review validation, has zero product reviews. The pattern is consistent: the editorial design world and the consumer review world operate on different timelines.

Our system measures the second.

What Would Change

More verified purchase reviews across any platform would shift the confidence score. The editorial credentials are already strong. The retail validation through SSENSE is real.

What the system lacks is evidence from someone who bought a Lola Mayeras product and described the experience.
