She arrived in Marrakech with four hundred euros and a sewing machine. Her New York stockist's page for her is empty.

Did not pass

Laurence Leenaert arrived in Marrakech in 2015 with 400 euros and a sewing machine.

She had dropped out of her Master’s at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent and interned at the Berlin fashion label Bless. She had no studio, no team, and no plan beyond a feeling that Morocco was where she belonged.

Ten years later, she runs LRNCE from a studio in the Sidi Ghanem industrial district, where more than 40 artisans produce ceramics, textiles, framed artworks, and furniture.

Elle Decoration UK published a feature on her Marrakech apartment. Sight Unseen, the New York design publication, has profiled her twice. Gestalten devoted a chapter of The New Mediterranean to her studio.

Lampoon Magazine in Milan covered her production process. Tigmi Trading in Australia stocks her ceramics. Her Instagram account has 327,000 followers.

We evaluated her CASNA, a hand-carved plaster artwork framed in mahogany. It is made in Marrakech using traditional techniques. Laurence draws the design, artisans carve the plaster, and the finished piece is mounted in a floating mahogany frame.

It measures 30 by 35 centimeters and sells for €395, approximately $425.

Every piece is slightly different because every piece is made by hand.

What We Verified

The brand’s story checks out at every turn.

Leenaert studied fashion design at KASK in Ghent and interned at Bless in Berlin, both confirmed across multiple independent sources.

The Sight Unseen studio visit in January 2018 documented her showroom in the medina and named three stockists: Totokaelo in New York, Le Bon Marché in Paris, and the Conran Shop in London.

By 2019, she described working with 35 artisans, nine of them on her design team. The brand page now lists more than 40.

Tigmi Trading in Australia published an interview with two of the ceramics artisans, Yousef and Hassan, who described their process in detail: terracotta clay transported from Safi, soaked in water for seven days, foot-kneaded for three, then hand-kneaded, thrown, sun-dried, bisque-fired for eight hours at 1,500 degrees Celsius, coated in white clay, hand-painted, and glazed.

This is not a brand that hides its production. The supply chain is short, local, and documented by independent journalists.

The editorial validation is among the strongest we have encountered for a brand at this price point. Elle Decoration UK is a Hearst publication. Sight Unseen is one of the most respected voices in independent design. Gestalten is a global design publisher.

These are not paid placements or influencer partnerships. Leenaert earned this coverage over a decade of consistent work.

Where It Fell Short

We found zero product-level reviews on any platform.

Not on the LRNCE website, which has no review functionality at all. Not on any stockist page. Not on Amazon or Etsy, where the brand does not sell. Not on Trustpilot. Not on Reddit.

We checked Oroboro, the New York boutique that carries LRNCE, and found the collection page empty with a “please check back soon” notice.

Our scoring system treated this exactly as it treats every product without customer reviews.

The Brand Trust Protocol applied, awarding credit for editorial coverage, premium retail presence, brand heritage, and artisan craft documentation. That brought the confidence score to 43 out of 100, producing a trust score of 4.3.

The trust score cleared the 4.0 floor. But when it entered the final SleekNova formula, the overall score landed at 7.80.

The threshold is 8.0.

Visual appeal scored 8. Discovery factor scored 9. Gift scene scored 8. Trust, at 4.3, pulled the composite below the line.

Why This One Stings

LRNCE is, by every editorial and institutional measure, a legitimate and accomplished brand.

Leenaert’s trajectory from 400 euros to 40 artisans and 327,000 followers is not marketing copy. It is documented across seven independent publications spanning 2016 to 2023.

She opened a boutique hotel, Riad Rosemary. She exhibited at Maison & Objet and NY NOW. She launched a fashion collaboration with the Australian label Alemais.

But our system does not score editorial acclaim. It scores whether a customer who spent real money can tell the next customer what to expect.

Not a single person, across any corner of the internet, has publicly described the experience of buying, receiving, unwrapping, or living with an LRNCE product.

That silence, given 327,000 followers, is the gap our methodology cannot bridge.

What Would Change the Outcome

Verified customer reviews on any platform would shift the confidence score. The editorial foundation is already strong enough that even a modest review base would meaningfully change the math.

More reviews from more platforms would provide the evidence our system needs to match what the press has already validated.
