Twenty-Three Years in SoHo. A 7.85.

Its fourteen reviews are spread across five calendar years. A TikTok about the brand's hot chocolate was watched 361,622 times.

Did not pass

Maribel Lieberman was eight years old when she started selling candy to neighborhood children under the palm trees of Honduras.

That detail is on the About page of a company that now operates chocolate boutiques inside the Pierre Hotel and the Kitano Hotel in Manhattan. Between those two facts sits a 23-year-old SoHo institution, a Brooklyn factory, a Cacao Bar with OpenTable reservations, and the kind of press wall most food brands fabricate in Photoshop.

MarieBelle’s About page displays logos from twelve publications. The New York Times. CNN. Food & Wine. NBC News. InStyle. The Oprah Winfrey Show. We verified the page. The logos are there.

The Infatuation included MarieBelle in its “Best Hot Chocolate in NYC” guide in December 2025. On Yelp, the SoHo flagship at 484 Broome Street has 740 reviews, 1,761 photos, and a 4.3-star rating. A TikTok from @thecarboholic reviewing MarieBelle’s hot chocolate has been viewed 361,622 times.

None of that is in dispute. What we evaluated is the Duo Hot Chocolate Gift Set, two 10-ounce tins of shaved 60% single-origin cacao (Aztec Dark and Milk Chocolate Hazelnut) for $59. This is drinking chocolate, not powder. You melt it into water or milk. It is, by every account we found, exceptional.

What We Found

The Duo Gift Set has 14 reviews on MarieBelle’s product page, powered by Judge.me. The rating is 4.93 out of 5.0, with 13 five-star and one four-star review spanning five calendar years (2021 through 2025).

Five of those 14 reviews specifically mention buying it as a gift. One reviewer called it “pure decadence” and noted the shaved chocolate produces “a richer, creamier chocolate experience.” Another described it as “always part of gift giving.”

On Amazon, MarieBelle’s storefront lists six hot chocolate products. The Aztec 10oz Tin has 4.6 stars from 8 reviews. The 20oz Aztec Refill Bag has 4.5 stars from 16 reviews. The Duo Gift Set itself is not sold on Amazon.

We searched for the specific Oprah, Forbes, and New York Times article URLs referenced on every MarieBelle product page. We could not locate them. The press logos on the About page confirm these outlets have covered the brand, but we could not verify specific articles about the hot chocolate product.

The Scores

GLOW scored 8. The twin tins photograph as a cohesive gift, and the branding reads as luxury, not grocery. WOW scored 8. Shaved cacao drinking chocolate is a format most people outside New York haven’t encountered, and SleekNova’s database had no drinking chocolate at all.

MOMENT scored 8. Two tins, the choice of which to open first, the preparation ritual of melting real chocolate into a cup.

TRUST scored 7.0. Fourteen product-specific reviews on Judge.me, extraordinary brand-level validation, but thin volume on the specific product we evaluated.

The weighted calculation: (8 x 0.25) + (8 x 0.35) + (8 x 0.25) + (7.0 x 0.15) = 7.85.

Threshold is 8.0.

Why It Fell Short

This is not a trust problem with MarieBelle. A brand operating continuously since 2002, with three Manhattan retail locations including two luxury hotels, editorial coverage from a dozen major outlets, and 740 Yelp reviews for its flagship does not have a credibility issue.

The issue is narrower than that: the Duo Hot Chocolate Gift Set, as a specific product in our system, has 14 reviews. Our confidence scoring methodology evaluates product-level evidence, not brand-level reputation.

Brand validation contributed to the score through our Brand Trust Protocol, which is why Trust landed at 7.0 rather than lower. But 7.0 was not enough to clear the final threshold when weighted at 15%.

The math is unsentimental. We wanted this product in the database. It would have been the first drinking chocolate we recommended, filling a genuine gap in a category with 22 products. The founder’s story, from Honduras to Parsons to SoHo, is exactly the kind of narrative our system is built to celebrate.

But our system requires the evidence it requires.

What Would Change

More verified reviews on the Duo Gift Set across multiple platforms would shift the confidence score. The brand’s institutional credibility is not in question. The gap is between that credibility and the product-specific review base our system uses to calculate trust.

A stronger review base for this particular product would close that gap.

MarieBelle’s Cacao Bar takes reservations on OpenTable. The SoHo shop has been open since 2002. The hot chocolate, by every account, is closer to a European drinking chocolate than anything made from powder.

We did the research. We respect the result. The score is 7.85.
