What We Verified
“Maskor” is the Basque word for seashell. That claim appears on Gantri’s product page, and it checks out. The designers behind it, Lucas Abajo and Laxmi Nazabal, run Muka Design Lab from Bilbao in Spain’s Basque Country.
Muka won a Red Dot Design Award (Concept, 2015), and their work has been featured in design publications internationally. Every Muka product carries a Basque name: Balea (whale), Buia (buoy), Argizari (a reference to ancient candle traditions). The naming convention is not marketing. It is a design language rooted in a specific place.
The lamp itself is 3D-printed from plant polymers derived from non-GMO sugarcane at Gantri’s factory in San Leandro, California. Each unit is made to order. There is no warehouse of Maskors sitting on shelves.
The 2700K color temperature produces warm light, and a built-in dimmer on the cord switches from reading brightness down to ambient glow. Gantri’s platform was named a TIME Best Invention of 2020.

Two factors. The brand is Dezeen-featured but remains unknown to most people outside of design circles. That is a WOW strength in one sense (discovery factor) and a limitation in another (fewer reference points for gift recipients who have never heard of Gantri).
The second factor: the made-to-order model means a 2-4 week wait. For lighting gifts where the occasion has a fixed date, that lead time requires planning.
