The Mondo Mondo Mood Ring Scored 8.3. The Stores That Stock It Explain Why.
Made the cut
The Mondo Mondo Mood Ring costs $195. It is sterling silver with an acrylic mood stone that shifts between six colors. Natasha Ghosn makes it by hand in Los Angeles.
Those are the claims on the product page. We verified every one of them across eight independent sources, scored it through our 145-point process, and it earned an 8.3 on the SleekNova Scale. Here is what the verification uncovered and why the score landed where it did.
What We Verified
Natasha Ghosn holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The New York Times profiled her work in August 2021 in a piece on bold sculptural jewelry.
Her grandfather, Saul Borisov, created experimental tapestries at Bazaar Sabado in Mexico City beginning in the 1960s. Ghosn retraced that path and learned metalsmithing from artisans in the same community. She founded Mondo Mondo, first as a t-shirt line in 2012, then expanded into the jewelry and fragrance work that defines the brand today.
SSENSE carries Mondo Mondo with a full editorial profile, placing the brand alongside Margiela and Lemaire in their buying selection. Frances May in Portland stocks six Mondo Mondo products alongside Margiela, Lemaire, TOTEME, Sophie Buhai, Bode, and Rachel Comey.
Assembly New York, which has carried the Mood Ring for years through Garmentory, calls it “a staple from the brand.” On The RealReal, 42 Mondo Mondo items have been listed with 21 already sold, a 50% sell-through rate that indicates sustained demand in the resale market.
How It Scored
The Mondo Mondo Mood Ring earned an 8.3 on the SleekNova Scale. The breakdown: GLOW 8, WOW 9, MOMENT 9, TRUST 6. The formula weights WOW at 35%, GLOW and MOMENT at 25% each, and TRUST at 15%.
WOW scored highest at 9. No other designer brand makes a mood ring in sterling silver. Mondo Mondo occupies a category of one: a universally recognized childhood novelty rebuilt as SSENSE-stocked, handmade designer jewelry at $195.
The line extends from this entry piece through $325 cocktail rings to diamond engagement jewelry. That range is the context for the price.
MOMENT also scored 9. The color shift is immediate once body heat activates the thermochromic acrylic. The stone cycles from black through amber to green, and each color corresponds to a label on Mondo Mondo’s proprietary mood chart.
BLACK: deep dark secrets. BLUE: stand up comic. PINK: ecstatic state of bliss. The chart replaces generic temperature readings with literary personality sketches, turning a color change into a group activity.
Someone reads a color aloud. Someone else tries the ring on their own finger. The interaction repeats every time the ring is worn in a new setting.
GLOW scored 8. The band is .925 sterling silver, a material that will not react with skin or degrade with daily wear. The oversized oval mood stone cycles through six distinct hues. It photographs differently depending on the wearer’s body temperature at the moment, which means the ring never looks the same twice in photos.
TRUST scored 6, the lowest dimension. The reason: zero product-level reviews exist for this specific ring. Thingtesting has two brand-level reviews with a 4.0 out of 5 rating, but neither addresses the Mood Ring directly.
We applied our Brand Trust Protocol, which recognizes institutional validation when consumer review data is absent. The NYT profile, SSENSE stocking, Frances May placement, 50% RealReal sell-through, SAIC education, and physical LA studio collectively established the confidence we needed. The final confidence score landed at 60%, which we label “good.”
The Mood Chart Is the Real Differentiator
A standard mood ring uses the same thermochromic guide from 1975: blue means calm, black means stressed. Mondo Mondo wrote their own system. Each of the six colors gets a personality, not a clinical reading.
AMBER: melancholic, write in diary. GREEN: natural and organic. VIOLET: visionary. The labels read like character descriptions, and that reframing is what transforms a novelty into a social object.
People read the chart aloud. They compare results. They hold a cold glass against the stone to force it back to black and see what “deep dark secrets” feels like. The mood chart is included in the box with every ring.
Who This Is For
The best friend who had a mood ring phase at 12 and would wear the sterling silver version every day. The sibling who shares childhood references nobody else has.
The person who has everything from Le Labo to Diptyque but has never been given a designer mood ring. For birthday gifting, the color shift creates an interactive unwrapping moment that turns a one-person gift opening into a table-wide activity.
Two cautions. Water permanently damages the mood stone, so this is not for someone who washes dishes without removing rings. Most sizes ship as pre-order with a 6 to 8 week lead time, so plan accordingly. If the stone does get damaged, Mondo Mondo offers a paid stone replacement service.
Why 8.3 and Not Higher
The trust dimension held the score back. Two brand-level reviews on Thingtesting is thin data. No product-specific star rating exists anywhere.
The institutional validation is exceptional (NYT, SSENSE, Frances May, RealReal resale performance), but our methodology weights consumer reviews as a distinct signal, and that signal is nearly absent here.
The Mood Ring has been in Mondo Mondo’s collection since at least 2020 based on the Garmentory listing date, and Assembly NY has carried it for years. A piece that outlasts years of trends without accumulating consumer reviews is unusual, and we note it without resolving the tension.
The 8.3 reflects a product with a 9 in two dimensions and institutional backing that most $195 jewelry cannot match, held to 8.3 by the gap between institutional confidence and consumer documentation. See the full product page for the Mondo Mondo Mood Ring.
