A Prayer Bell, a Shopkeeper’s Suggestion, and a Design Award

Made the cut

Nousaku Nousaku Wind Chime Slim $89 Scored 8.5 / 10 View Product Page

The orin is a Buddhist bell struck during prayer. Nousaku, a brass foundry in Takaoka, had been making them since 1916.

At some point around 2002, the company’s president heard the resonance of the orin and tried to bring that tone into a consumer product. He made a brass dinner bell. It sat on shelves.

A shopkeeper in Tokyo suggested adding a paper strip and calling it a wind chime.

That suggestion changed the trajectory of a 109-year business. We scored the WOW factor 9 out of 10.

What a 9 out of 10 for WOW means

WOW accounts for 35% of our composite score, the single heaviest dimension. It measures how rare, storied, and genuinely surprising a product is.

The Nousaku Wind Chime Slim earned a 9 because three verification layers converge on one object.

First, the origin: a foundry that manufactured Buddhist ritual objects in brass and bronze since 1916, operating from Takaoka City, where casting tradition spans over 400 years.

Second, the pivot: a failed dinner bell repurposed on the advice of a single retailer.

Third, the external validation: the Golden Pin Design Award in 2016 recognized this exact form, the Wind Chime Slim, alongside three other Nousaku products. MoMA Design Store in New York selected Nousaku products beginning in 2008, including their bendable pure tin basket, which won the same Golden Pin Award that year.

We verified each of these claims independently. The founding date, the Buddhist altar origins, the 400-year Takaoka heritage, and the Golden Pin Award all trace to Nousaku’s official company history. The MoMA selection is confirmed through the same source.

The Amazon review history spans from 2015 to 2026 with 82 verified purchase reviews across the Slim Silver and Gold variants, scoring between 4.4 and 4.8 stars.

The brass itself

The Slim is made of brass, 60% copper and 40% zinc. Each piece is hand-finished by artisans using a hairline technique on a pottery wheel, blending the texture of the material with the design.

The bell measures 128mm tall and 40mm in diameter. The narrow opening is deliberate: it concentrates sound into a lower pitch than Nousaku’s wider Onion variant.

Brass resists corrosion, which means the chime works outdoors year-round while developing patina over time. The same foundry casts the S/N Brass Pen Stand, a collaboration with the creator of Hasami Porcelain, using the same sand-casting process for a completely different object.

GLOW scored 8 out of 10. The hairline finish creates a sleek, elongated silhouette that photographs like a sculpture. Three finishes are available from the same mold: gold (natural brass with transparent urethane), silver, and pink gold.

The finish choice lets givers match the Nousaku Wind Chime Slim to a recipient’s existing aesthetic.

What happens when it arrives

MOMENT scored 8 out of 10. The cosmetic box opens to reveal a bell, a clapper disc, and a white washi paper strip on a thread. Three components, no assembly beyond hanging.

The recipient finds a spot near a window or under an eave and waits. When wind moves the paper strip, the clapper swings and the brass produces a single sustained note.

Not a tinkle. A resonance that lingers.

Reviewers describe the tone as transparent, gentle, and healing. One reviewer called it a soulful object. Another bought one in Japan and returned to Amazon to purchase more as gifts.

Who we matched it to

The Slim fits five gift relationships we evaluated. Friends who keep windows open and notice how rooms sound. Hosts whose spaces have the visual dialed but lack a sonic layer. Grandparents with quiet houses and a relationship with wind.

The person who has everything except sound as interior design.

If they already own the Nousaku Tin Beer Cup, the Slim adds a second sensory layer from the same foundry: ambient sound alongside thermal conductivity.

Colleagues with visible taste in design objects, where a Golden Pin Award and MoMA selection validate the giver’s judgment without requiring personal intimacy.

At $89, the Slim sits in a range where the heritage far exceeds the price. A 109-year foundry, a product-specific design award, and MoMA selection would typically price higher. The perceived value, based on those credentials, tracks closer to $140.

Why we are confident

TRUST scored 9 out of 10, derived from a confidence score of 85. Five factors contributed: source diversity at 15, source quality at 20, claim verification at 15, platform integrity at 15, and temporal consistency at 20.

The temporal consistency score reflects review data spanning over a decade, from 2015 to 2026. Confidence is high because the claims stack across independent channels: Amazon customer reviews, official company records, the Golden Pin Design Award database, and physical retail presence at Santoku NYC and 20+ stores across Japan.

The factory itself earned a Michelin Green Guide 1-star rating and draws 120,000 annual visitors.

The composite SleekNova Score is 8.5, calculated as (8 x 0.25) + (9 x 0.35) + (8 x 0.25) + (9 x 0.15). The minimum to feature is 8.0.

The Slim passed.
