The $150 Bronze Bottle Opener in Two Museum Collections
Made the cut
Two museums in Australia have a bottle opener in their permanent collections. MAAS Sydney and AGWA Perth. Not a ceremonial object or a sculptor’s maquette.
A bronze bottle opener that costs $150.
The Prise, designed by Henry Wilson, is lost-wax cast at a small-scale art foundry in Sydney, hot-patinated by hand, and sealed in restoration wax. It weighs 382 grams. We scored it 9.5 out of 10 for WOW, our highest-weighted dimension, and 8.5 overall.
Here is what we verified and why that number holds.
The Foundry Process Behind a 9 for GLOW
Lost-wax casting is a centuries-old technique used by bronze sculptors to create works where the mold is destroyed after a single use. Every Prise is manufactured at a small-scale art foundry in Sydney using this process.
The bronze is then hot-patinated, producing a rich, dark, tarnish-resistant surface, and sealed in restoration wax. A maker’s mark is punched into the underside. Slight variations occur from one piece to another because the process demands it.
Our GLOW dimension measures visual and sensory qualities. Solid bronze, a hot-patinated finish, a maker’s mark, subtle casting variations, and a sculptural form meant for display rather than a kitchen drawer. We gave it a 9.
The Credentials We Traced
Henry Wilson holds an MA from Design Academy Eindhoven. He established Studio Henry Wilson in Sydney in 2012, building a close relationship with a local foundry for cast elements in bronze.
The Calile Hotel in Brisbane, ranked #34 on the World’s 50 Best Hotels 2025 list, collaborated with Wilson to place a Prise in every room. Aesop commissioned him for a partnership. Jaeger-LeCoultre partnered with him as well. His work sits in the permanent collections of MAAS Sydney and AGWA Perth.
A hotel ranked among the world’s 50 best does not select an in-room object casually. These are sourced, vetted, and chosen to reflect the property’s design identity.
The Calile chose the Prise.
Why WOW Scored 9.5
WOW is weighted at 35% of our final score. It measures uniqueness and discovery factor. The Prise earned a 9.5 because of the convergence: a World’s 50 Best Hotel collaboration, partnerships with Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aesop, museum permanent collections in Sydney and Perth, and availability only through design stockists.
You will not find this on Amazon. You will not find it at a department store. The discovery is genuine.
MOMENT scored 8.5. At 382 grams, the bronze registers the instant it lands in someone’s palm. Opening a bottle with this weight changes the gesture entirely. Bronze ages alongside use, developing a patina unique to the owner over time.
The Trust Score We Report Honestly
TRUST scored 5.5. We report this without apology.
The Prise is a small-batch artisan product with no consumer reviews. That is expected for this category and distribution model. Trust comes from verified designer credentials (MA Design Academy Eindhoven), The Calile Hotel collaboration (#34 World’s 50 Best Hotels 2025), Aesop and Jaeger-LeCoultre partnerships, museum permanent collections (MAAS Sydney, AGWA Perth), and presence across 15+ design stockists globally.
Not from star ratings.
We do not inflate scores because the design press is enthusiastic. Institutional validation is strong here. Consumer data is absent. We measure both and report the number: 5.5.
The Final Number: 8.5
Our formula: (GLOW 9 x 0.25) + (WOW 9.5 x 0.35) + (MOMENT 8.5 x 0.25) + (TRUST 5.5 x 0.15) = 8.5. Above our 8.0 threshold to feature on SleekNova.
That 5.5 Trust score kept the final number grounded. Without it, the WOW and GLOW scores alone might suggest a 9+ product. We measure what we can verify across source types. When consumer reviews do not exist, the score reflects that gap, even when the institutional evidence is overwhelming.
Who We Matched This To
Fathers with strong taste who would never spend $150 on a bottle opener for themselves. Quiet luxury appreciators who notice when an object is handmade versus stamped from a mold.
The Prise sits on the bar, not in a drawer. At 382 grams, it stays where you put it. Guests pick it up and feel the weight before they understand what it does.
This is the gift for someone who treats their bar as self-expression. The bronze is the statement. The function is incidental. If your recipient prefers lightweight tools over sculptural weight, this is not the right match.
At $150, the Prise costs less than most people realize. Comparable lost-wax cast bronze objects from design retailers start well above $200. The difference is that this one opens bottles. Every day. For decades.
Getting better the entire time.
