In between, Queen Elizabeth II, the Prince of Wales, the Queen Mother, and the Duke of Edinburgh all granted Royal Warrants to Smythson. Only eight companies in history have held all four warrants simultaneously.

What We Verified
Frank Smythson opened his boutique at 133 New Bond Street in 1887. Twenty-one years later, his company invented Featherweight paper for Grand Tour travelers who needed to write without adding weight to their luggage.
That paper is still in production.
The Fountain Pen Network tested it in 2008: “No feathering, no bleeding. It’s incredible.” Notebook Stories confirmed in 2022: “Fountain pens work beautifully on this paper. There is pretty much no bleedthrough, and show-through is less than Tomoe River paper.”
The product page lists crossgrain lambskin, 128 leaves of gilt-edged pale blue paper, made in England. Worn & Wound summarized the value proposition in October 2024: “You’re buying a leather journal that’s handmade from a heritage brand in London.”
Trustpilot shows 4.5 stars from 76 reviews. Premium retailer ABASK stocks the notebook. The heritage is verifiable. The craftsmanship is documented. The editorial consensus is clear.

Those 76 Trustpilot reviews are company-level. They cover shipping, customer service, packaging. Customers praise “beautiful gift wrapping” and “prompt delivery.”
This is valuable signal about Smythson as a company. It is not signal about the Panama Notebook as a product.
The product page shows three reviews. James W. writes that after months of debate, “The Panama is all that and more.” Robert O. calls it “as good as they get” and praises how it “copes ably with life in a front jeans pocket.” One reviewer notes quality concerns with the leather binding on the outer hinge.

A Royal Warrant means the palace buys from Smythson. It does not mean 500 fountain pen enthusiasts have tested this specific notebook and documented their experience.
