Twelve Reviews, Forty-Six Yelp Opinions, and a Portland Wallet at $95

A wallet sold on the promise of lasting forever had twelve Amazon ratings over six years and a Yelp page for the shop averaging 3.3 listed as closed.

Did not pass

A wallet made from English bridle leather in Portland, Oregon, priced at $95, designed to develop a patina over years of daily carry. Tanner Goods calls the Journeyman a buy-it-for-life product.

We spent a week trying to prove them right.

We could not.

What Amazon Told Us

The Journeyman has 12 ratings on Amazon, averaging 4.4 stars. No one-star reviews. No two-star reviews. The distribution reads like a product that satisfies the people who find it: 53% gave five stars, 32% gave four, 15% gave three. Three customers uploaded photos. Reviews span from 2020 to 2026.

One three-star reviewer on a second Amazon listing called it a “Card destroyer.” That was the harshest thing anyone said on the platform.

Twelve opinions over six years is not evidence of failure. It is evidence of obscurity.

A wallet competing at $95 against Bellroy and Saddleback needs a louder footprint than this.

What the Brand Site Told Us

On the Tanner Goods product page, two reviews. A perfect 5.0 stars. Kevin H. wrote “Beautiful!” Dan P. left his name but not much else.

We then checked the brand’s dedicated reviews page at tannergoods.com/pages/reviews.

It was empty. Not thin, not sparse. Empty.

What Yelp Told Us

Tanner Goods’ Portland storefront has 46 reviews on Yelp, averaging 3.3 out of 5. The Yelp listing shows the location as closed.

Earlier reviews are warm. But recent reviews from 2024 and 2025 reflect a shift in sentiment, with multiple reviewers raising concerns about material quality and customer service responsiveness. The pattern suggests a change from the earlier review profile.

Forty-six reviews on Yelp represent more consumer signal than twelve on Amazon and two on the brand site combined. We weighted accordingly.

Where the Math Landed

The wallet scored well on three of four dimensions. GLOW (how it looks): 8 out of 10. WOW (how unexpected it is): 8. MOMENT (what it feels like to give and receive): 8. Those are strong numbers.

The bridle leather photographs well, the Portland craft story is real, and the product has a genuine tactile presence.

Trust pulled the score down. Confidence reached only 50 out of 100, driven by thin review volume, limited source diversity, and the shift in recent Yelp sentiment. Trust scored 5.0 out of 10.

The final SleekNova Score: 7.55. Our threshold is 8.0.

Why This One Stings

Our leather and travel category is thin. A Portland-made wallet in English bridle leather at $95, with a genuine patina story, fills a real gap.

We wanted the numbers to work.

They did not. The review data across platforms did not provide the consistency our system requires. A product built on the promise of lasting forever needs more proof than this.

If Tanner Goods builds a stronger review presence and recent sentiment stabilizes, we would look again. The craft positioning is real. The verification is not there yet.

For an American-made leather wallet with the patina story and the proof to back it, the Lotuff Credit Card Wallet uses folded construction from RISD-trained Providence artisans. GQ has endorsed the brand since 2017. Lifetime guarantee. $125.
