Cigar Boxes and Bank Notes: Why Artisan Cards Score 9 for Design

Most playing card reviews measure handling and stock quality. We measure something else: visual design, scored on a 10-point scale we call GLOW.
The Theory11 Artisan Playing Cards Luxury Edition Box Set scored 9. That number traces to a single decision Theory11 made before production started.
They hired a wine label artist.
The Designer Who Had Never Drawn a Playing Card
Simon Frouws specializes in wine and spirits label design. He has worked in that field for 17 years, based in the Durbanville wine valley, 20 minutes north of Cape Town, South Africa.
Theory11 found him on Dribbble after seeing his Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee box, which used cigar packaging aesthetics to justify a super-premium price. They wanted the same visual language applied to playing cards.
Frouws spent months custom-drawing every element. His reference points were cigar boxes, share certificates, bank notes, and whisky labels.
Notably absent from that list: other playing cards.
The result looks immediately different because the design vocabulary comes from spirits packaging, not the card world.
What a GLOW Score of 9 Actually Means
GLOW measures visual and sensory qualities. We look at materials, finish, how a product photographs, how it ages, and design intentionality. The Artisans earned 9 because every visual element works together across multiple layers.
Gold foil is hot-stamped onto ultra-lux paper produced using FSC-certified materials derived from sustainable forests, with vegetable-based inks and starch-based laminates. The four decks sit inside a laser-etched wood box.
The back design carries the dense linework of vintage currency and share certificates. A red seal on each deck shows the exact month and year of printing.
The cards photograph like currency art because currency art is where the designer learned his craft.
What We Verified
We traced six claims through primary sources. Frouws confirmed his background and location in a published interview. David Copperfield’s endorsement, calling them “the best playing cards ever produced,” appears on the official Theory11 product page and across major retailers.
The Departures Magazine feature from May 2013 is stated on the Theory11 page and consistent across 10+ retailer listings. Kardify gave the deck a 9.5/10 editorial score. Production at The United States Playing Card Company and the FSC-certified material specifications are confirmed on the official product page.
We also tracked 469 Walmart Verified Purchase reviews spanning November 2012 through January 2026, where the deck holds 4.9 stars with 91% five-star ratings. Those reviews cover individual Artisan decks (the same cards included in the box set).
Direct box set reviews are more limited: 8 on Amazon UK at 4.2 stars. The trust score landed at 7.5, reflecting strong individual deck validation but thinner box set coverage.
Who We Matched This To
The Artisans fit a specific gap for wives shopping for husbands and dads: someone who hosts card nights with drugstore decks and has no idea luxury playing cards exist.
At $60 for four designer decks plus the wood box, the math favors the set. Individual premium decks run $15 to $25 each. The presentation justifies the price before the lid opens.
One Amazon reviewer gave them to their father, who thought they “looked and felt very fancy.” Collector forums recommend Black Artisans as a first premium deck.
What Would Change the Score
If customer-uploaded photos existed across Walmart, Amazon UK, or PlayingCardDecks, we could verify the visual claims independently. Despite 489+ reviews, no customer photos appear on any platform. This is common for collectibles where buyers preserve rather than photograph. Visual Proof scored 0/20 in our methodology for that reason.
More direct box set reviews (beyond 8 on Amazon UK) would strengthen the trust score. The individual deck evidence is overwhelming. The box set evidence is not yet at the same level.
The final score of 8.2 reflects a product where visual design carries the weight. The GLOW of 9 is earned by a designer whose entire career prepared him to make paper beautiful. The WOW of 8 captures a deck that is design-world famous and mainstream unknown.
