The Touch Test Every Gift Passes or Fails
Here’s something gift guides won’t tell you: touch can make or break your gift.
When researchers at the University of Kent had people handle a sweater branded as Primark (a UK fast-fashion chain), touch made no difference to evaluation. The hands found nothing special. The product was exactly what it appeared to be.
But when the same sweater carried a Chanel label, touch changed everything. Evaluation jumped significantly. The difference wasn’t the sweater. It was whether the brand’s promise could be amplified by contact with reality.
Sheena Karangi and Ben Lowe called this brand contagion. Their 2021 study in the Journal of Consumer Behaviour documented what happens the moment a recipient picks up your gift. For quality objects, touch amplifies everything you hoped they’d feel. For ordinary objects, touch adds nothing—the hands find no essence to transmit.
The Verification Your Hands Run
The study tested 184 participants across two experiments. In the first, people evaluated sweaters and pillowcases under two conditions: touching allowed, or visual inspection only. The products were branded as either Primark (familiar, non-luxury) or 4u2 (unfamiliar, non-luxury).
For pillowcases, touch mattered. Those who handled the fabric rated it significantly higher (4.26 vs. 3.58 on a 7-point scale). Touch explained 7.2% of the variance in evaluation. That’s a meaningful effect from simply allowing hands to meet material.
But here’s where it gets interesting for gift-givers.
When Karangi and Lowe ran a second experiment using the same sweater branded as Chanel, touch became even more powerful. Product evaluation in the touch condition hit 4.87 versus 4.12 for visual-only. Touch now explained 8% of variance.
The researchers had found something the gift industry ignores: physical contact matters more for quality products than for ordinary ones.
What Touch Actually Transmits
The mechanism behind this is what Karangi and Lowe call brand contagion. It’s borrowed from contagion theory in psychology, which explains how properties transfer from a source to a target through contact.
When you touch something, you don’t just gather information about texture and weight. You receive whatever essence that object carries.
For a luxury brand, that essence includes associations built over decades: quality, exclusivity, craftsmanship, status. When hands make contact, those associations activate more intensely than when eyes alone do the work. The researchers put it directly:
“Findings provide support for a brand contagion effect where a luxury branded product is concerned and suggest that this effect is activated through product touch.”
The inverse is also true. For products without that quality essence, touch adds nothing. The hands run a verification check and find nothing remarkable to transmit.
This explains the Primark finding—touch neither helped nor hurt. There was no luxury essence for contact to amplify.

The Familiarity Surprise
The researchers expected brand familiarity to matter. If you know a brand well, shouldn’t that knowledge compensate for not being able to touch the product? Online shopping depends on this assumption.
The data said no.
Brand familiarity had no significant moderating effect on touch. Knowing Primark well didn’t make up for not handling the sweater. Knowing nothing about 4u2 didn’t hurt evaluation when touch was allowed. The hands operate independently of brand knowledge.
For gift-givers, this has a specific implication: you cannot describe quality into existence. Telling someone “this is from an amazing brand” doesn’t substitute for the moment their hands verify the claim.
When Individual Differences Disappear
Previous research had established that people vary in their “need for touch.” Some people need to handle products before purchasing. Others are comfortable buying based on images alone. Karangi and Lowe measured this using the standard 12-item NFT scale.
For ordinary products, these individual differences matter. High-touch people respond more strongly to tactile information than low-touch people.
But for luxury products, that gap vanished. The interaction between touch condition and need-for-touch was not significant (p = .764). Everyone responded to the quality essence, regardless of their typical touch preferences.
This means you don’t need to know whether your recipient is “touchy” or not. If the gift has genuine quality, the hands will find it.
What This Means for Choosing Gifts
The research validates something SleekNova’s methodology assumes but rarely states explicitly: GLOW isn’t just about how a product photographs. It’s about what happens when hands meet material.

Lab Note
Karangi and Lowe tested fashion products (sweaters, pillowcases) with UK university students. We’re applying their findings more broadly to craft objects and gift contexts. The core mechanism, that touch amplifies quality perception for well-made items, likely transfers to the products above. But we haven’t tested whether a Denshiro workshop triggers the same brand contagion as a Chanel label.
We believe the craft heritage carries similar essence. The recipient’s hands will be the judge.
