Why We Started This

What changed The problem with gift guides, and what we're trying to fix

Every year, Americans spend $10 billion on gifts people don’t want.

Ten billion dollars. Returned. Regifted. Shoved in a closet.

That’s not a wrapping paper problem. That’s a picking problem.

The Internet Made It Worse

There are 30 million online stores. Amazon alone has 350 million products.

You’d think more options would help.

They don’t.

More options means more scrolling. More tabs. More “maybe this one?” And then you panic-buy something because you ran out of time.

Gift guides don’t help either. “50 Best Gifts for Mom.” Cool. Now I have to pick from 50 things instead of 350 million.

Progress?

What We Tried First

Our first idea was simple: just pick better products. Curate. Be picky. Show 20 great things instead of 50 random ones.

It didn’t work.

Because “great” depends on who it’s for.

A candle isn’t just a candle. A candle for your girlfriend’s birthday is different from a candle for your mom’s thank-you gift. Same product. Totally different situation.

The Thing Nobody Was Doing

Every gift site organizes by product. “Best candles.” “Best kitchen stuff.” “Best things under $50.”

But that’s not how gifting works.

When you need a gift, you don’t think “I need a candle.” You think “I need something for my girlfriend’s birthday that shows I actually thought about it.”

The relationship matters. The occasion matters. That’s what makes a gift work.

So we built around that.

What We’re Actually Doing

We match products to moments. Not “best candle” but “best candle for boyfriend giving to girlfriend for anniversary.”

That sounds complicated. It is. We built a whole system for it: relationships, occasions, scoring, verification. The nerdy stuff lives on our methodology page.

But the point is simple: we do the filtering so you don’t have to.

We look at thousands of products. We reject something like 99%. That is an estimate, not a count: most never enter the pipeline in the first place. You see the ones that actually fit your situation.

Why We’re Sharing This

We could keep all this hidden. Most sites do.

But we’re asking you to trust our recommendations. So you should see how we make them.

This section, The Lab, is where we show our work. Products we rejected. Decisions we made. Stuff we got wrong.

It won’t always be pretty.

That’s the point.

This is where it starts. More lab notes coming, including products we said no to, and why.
